Safety First with Electrics

Domestic & Commercial Electrical Contractors, NICEIC Approved Electricians, Data Cable Networks

Elecrtical SafetyA recent campaign launched by the Scottish trade association ‘Select’, talks about one of the dangers faced by those who carry out electrical work. This can include apprentices or tradesmen with extensive experience. They have named the initiative ‘Work dead safely: Stay alive’, and the message is communicated via an animation, infographic and brochure. The main focus of the campaign is concerned with isolation [as in electrical circuits not Covid!]. Hospital A&E departments up and down the country regularly deal with the sometimes fatal effects of electrical accidents.

Electricians provide an important service, imagine not having fully functioning electrical systems in our homes, offices, schools, infrastructure, hospitals etc. Electricity can be very unpredictable, and this is why their job is classed as one of the most hazardous. The negative consequences of not isolating safely while working with electricity cannot be stressed enough. Scores of electricians have suffered burns, scarring and even death as a result of skipping proper isolation steps. Select, seek to urge workers to follow the correct procedures to ensure their safety.

Included in the advice are ‘Ten steps to safe isolation’, which will be particularly helpful for trainees or those new to the sector. The list offers strict guidance for safe practice in a dangerous and complex field. When the body comes into contact with electricity, it can cause heart attacks, burns to skin and damage to internal organs.

Select are hoping their advice is taken on board far and wide, and that lives can be saved thanks to people thinking twice. It’s a simple message, make sure that the electrical supply is disconnected or isolated from the source before beginning the work. The figures prove that observing the simple safety rules can drastically lower the risk of fatalities.
