Electrical Tool and Equipment Hire

You may not have heard of the Men in Sheds initiative, a concept which originally started in Australia, but is now growing at an amazing rate throughout the UK. The idea is to bring predominantly older men together regularly, who can then make things, share skills, chat, socialise and of course drink tea. Men who are perhaps retired and may have lost their partner are at a significantly high risk of becoming lonely and isolated. Up to now, there haven’t been many places available for them to go and feel useful or part of a community.

The Men in Sheds Association is rapidly changing all that, as men are encouraged to start their own local Men’s Shed. Members of these sheds or ‘Shedders’ as they are affectionately known get together to form a shed, usually with help and advice from the Association. The sheds quickly become popular as word gets around, and people learn of the activities being undertaken. [There are even a few Women’s Sheds around now!]

Some sheds contribute to their community by working on projects like constructing flower tubs for the neighbourhood, or raising money for charities by making items to sell. It gives people great pleasure to see the results of their hobby being used to help others. Men’s Sheds are springing up all over Essex and London, in places like Grays, Chelmsford, Rayleigh, Brentwood and Romford.

Shed participants can do as little or as much as they wish, as the real benefits are gained by just being there. They can bring their own tools, club together to buy and share tools, or if they need a more expensive electrical tool for a specific project they can hire the item. Most agree that the ‘Men in Sheds’ concept is a lifesaver!
